Pre-Round Warm-Up Routines That Actually Work

Pre-Round Warm-Up Routines That Actually Work

Most recreational golfers arrive at the first tee having done nothing more physical than carrying their bag from the car park. Then they wonder why they make double-bogey on the opening hole before finding their rhythm. A proper pre-round warm-up doesn't need to be lengthy or elaborate, but it does need to be intentional. Even 15 minutes of targeted preparation can mean the difference between a sluggish front nine and hitting the ground running from the very first swing.

Begin away from the golf club entirely. Start with dynamic stretching to wake up the muscles and joints you'll be using for the next four hours. Leg swings, hip circles, trunk rotations, and arm cross-body stretches all prime the body for athletic movement without the static holds that can temporarily reduce muscle power. Spend three to five minutes on these movements before you touch a club. Your goal is to elevate your heart rate slightly and increase blood flow to the major muscle groups.

When you move to the practice area, work from short to long — not the other way around. Begin with a few chip shots to get a feel for the turf and the pace of your swing. Move to half-wedge shots, then full wedges, then mid-irons, and finally fairway woods and driver. This progression builds swing speed gradually and prevents the overhitting that comes from trying to bomb driver before your body is warm. Spend the final few minutes of range time hitting shots that simulate what you'll face on the first hole.

Save at least five minutes for the putting green before you tee off. Putt from various distances to calibrate your feel for the day's green speed, and finish with several short putts inside three feet to build confidence. There is no faster way to sabotage your mental state on the first hole than missing a short putt you expected to make. Ending your warm-up with successful holed putts sends you to the first tee with genuine confidence rather than just hope.
